Press release, 3 March 2021
On 3 March 2021, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, met with Kersti Kaljulaid, President of the Republic of Estonia. This meeting is part of the working visit of Ms Kaljulaid to Lithuania to mark the centenary of the recognition of independence of the Republic of Lithuania by the Government of the Republic of Estonia.
‘I am pleased to welcome the President of Estonia to the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania today and at the same time to recall a century-old event that is particularly important for our countries because back then Estonia recognised Lithuania’s independence. This gave a start for our excellent relations and laid the foundation for successful cooperation in various bilateral areas and comprehensive dialogue maintained to this day in the European Union and NATO,’ said the Speaker of the Seimas.
During the meeting, the Speaker of the Seimas and the President of Estonia discussed bilateral cooperation in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and implementation of e-democracy in our countries.
‘Joint efforts of the Baltic States can help the region to stabilise the economic and social situation more rapidly and ensure the safety of our people. We also attach great importance to Nordic-Baltic cooperation, which has to be necessarily continued throughout the pandemic. We look forward to further developing useful consultations and sharing knowledge. This expertise exchange is especially relevant during the pandemic to ensure safe and universal access to electronic public services,’ said Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen.
