Press release, 17 November 2020
In the framework of his working visit to Lithuania, Andrzej Duda, President of the Republic of Poland, congratulated the newly elected Seimas and the entire Lithuanian nation on the 500th anniversary of the birth of Sigismund Augustus, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania.
In his speech at the Seimas sitting, President Duda discussed the current developments drawing on the historical links between Lithuania and Poland. The Polish President said that, although established a long time ago, the Union of Lublin was, in a way, a precursor of the European Union. He also noted that it was the vigilance, the sense of responsibility and the visions of Poles and Lithuanians that led to the establishment of this united entity, making it a success story, as the Polish-Lithuanian union, with a common Parliament, common head of state and common foreign policy, succeeded in preserving two separate states.
Andrzej Duda underlined the importance of defence cooperation between Poland and Lithuania, and thanked the Lithuanian government for its decision to join the Three Seas Initiative Investment Fund. The President of the Republic of Poland believes this is an important decision reflecting the joint aspiration to make the most of the economic potential in the region. It also shows that both Lithuania and Poland have ideas and ways to overcome the economic crisis caused by the pandemic.
