Seimas established the Aleksandras Stulginskis Star award

Press release, 22 December 2020

In the framework of the centenary of the Constituent Seimas and the proclamation of the Republic of Lithuania, the Seimas has decided to establish the Aleksandras Stulginskis Star award. The law on the establishment of the award (No XIIIP-5024(2)) was adopted by 109 votes in favour with 1 vote against and 2 abstentions.

The award, which is intended to honour the outstanding personality of Aleksandras Stulginskis, Speaker of the Constituent Seimas and acting President of the Republic of the time, will be granted for promoting parliamentary values, democracy and statehood.

Natural and legal persons of the Republic of Lithuania and foreign countries, as well as stateless persons may be eligible to receive the Aleksandras Stulginskis Star. However, the Star may not be awarded to the incumbent President of the Republic, Members of the Seimas and the Government, and liquidated or reorganised legal persons. It may not be awarded posthumously either.

The adopted law stipulates that natural and legal persons are entitled to nominate candidates for the award.

The winner of the award will be selected by the Commission for the Award of the Aleksandras Stulginskis Star, approved by the Seimas and comprising nine members. A maximum of two awards may be granted per calendar year.

The Commission will accept nominations annually between 1 January and 20 February. The award is to be conferred before 15 April by virtue of the relevant decision of the Seimas.

The award will be annually presented on 15 May, the anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Lithuania by the Constituent Seimas, or on the day of the nearest sitting.

This year, Lithuania celebrates the centenary of the Constituent Seimas and the Republic of Lithuania. A hundred years ago, the Constituent Seimas, elected in the first democratic parliamentary elections in Lithuania, brought into effect the Act on Independence of Lithuania of 16 February 1918 and proclaimed the re-established State of Lithuania to be a democratic republic.
